MUJE(무제)
"MUJE" means "untitled poem" in Korean and simultaneously describes the "mist on a distant sea that appears like land"—an illusion of something tangible yet elusive. This concept of something infinite, vast, and distant, which nevertheless feels familiar, permeates the entire performance. MUJE is in search of a different perception of harmony—one filled with dissonances that challenge our perspective on human coexistence.
The structure of MUJE is inspired by jazz improvisation. Much like in jazz solos, the performers seek to express their individuality, which at times is interrupted, overlaps, forms duets, and continuously transforms. Dance, music, and light move through this landscape of dissonance like jazz musicians, with ever-changing rhythms and movements. The performers maintain their individuality while simultaneously creating something new and interconnected together. A central element of MUJE’s soundscape is the Piri and the Taepyeongso, two traditional Korean wind instruments. These instruments are deeply rooted in Korean musical tradition and are inseparable from shamanistic rituals that honor souls and guide them to peace. In MUJE, this ritualistic quality is reflected not only in the sound but also in the choreography and movement.
In its exploration of coexistence through dissonance, MUJE becomes a metaphor for the complexity of human relationships.
Can true harmony only arise when we recognize and accept the beauty in dissonance, rather than seeking to smooth over differences? Through a layered interplay of sound, light, and movement, MUJE invites the audience into a space of discomfort, urging them to embrace the unfamiliar, the unsettling, and the relentless search for a balance that may never be fully achieved.
